about

I wrote all but the last verse at the end of 2016. The tabloids, the Queen's Honours List, the US election result, and what I felt to be the beginning of a new sociological madness inspired most of this song. Revisiting it this year it seemed that with social distancing the song was about a very different era, yet still relevant in the light of the political climate.

lyrics

Take us to our final meetings
Take our place in social greetings
Playgrounds of the valleys of the kings
In celebration
Of the special ones

At the end of the year
As we plan for the times to come

From the graveyards of ambition
Resolutions take position
And you know you’re in control
Of everything you choose to believe

At the end of the year
The measure of how far we’ve run

The grass is greener on the golf course
Greener still- God’s chosen workforce
Holding onto promises of hope
For white salvation
Tyrrany and fear

At the end of the year
The snow has to melt some time

Celebrity engulfs the unseen
Hero hidden by the smokescreen
Gameshow winners take care of their own
For recognition
To their dreams we adhere

At the end of the year
As we draw closer still to the throne

So here’s a wish for reinvention
From the mires of misconception
Fairness meets the phoenix
In arenas of clear connection
A new course to steer

A new place to rest our faith
At the end of the year
